Brewing with all senses: EU-GIFT brings European brewing traditions together in Geisenheim
Geisenheim. European Agri-Food Week 2026
As part of the European Agri-Food Week, Hochschule Geisenheim University hosted an interactive workshop exploring the history, production and diversity of German and European beer, combining knowledge, tradition and sensory experience within the framework of EU-GIFT
For the first time at Hochschule Geisenheim University’s Beverage Technology Centre, participants had the opportunity to discover how different beer styles are created and how regional brewing traditions contribute to their distinctive character.
Led by Felix Baumgartner, the workshop offered staff and visitors an introduction to the history and production of German and other European beers, while providing insights into the brewing process and the fundamental role of malting.
Participants explored different ingredients and traditional recipes through a practical and sensory approach, carefully examining and tasting samples along the way. The experience highlighted the close relationship between craftsmanship, flavour and regional identity.
The workshop formed part of the European Agri-Food Week, an initiative connected to the EU-GIFT European University Alliance that brings together knowledge, experiences and perspectives from across Europe around agri-food traditions, innovation and sustainability.
Activities such as this reflect EU-GIFT’s commitment to fostering knowledge exchange, hands-on learning and cooperation between European universities, while celebrating the diversity of Europe’s agri-food culture.
